Hello again .

I'm about to run some Cat6 cable from an upstairs room where the master phone socket and router are located, to a couple of downstairs rooms (separate cables).

Got everythink, sockets an' all, but have a Q I cannot seem to get a clear answer on anywhere - do I wire it at each end exactly the same? Ie - each colour goes to the same pin on each socket? Or should the cable be 'crossed over' along the way?

I think I've read somewhere (but ain't sure...) that modern routers will electronically work out the connections and switch them over if needed? Or perhaps that the short 'patch' cables that will connect between the router and the socket, and the socket and the PC (or tele) might have that 'cross-overs' in them?

What is the current situation on this, please?

You pick a standard and stick to it.

568A or 568B - In the UK, we seem to use B - it's what I always use, but to be fair, it doesn't matter as long as you pick and stick to it.

You don't cross anything over. That would only be if it was direct cable connection, even then you are talking about something that's not been needed for years and years (just about all modern cards, etc do that automatically).

Don't forget your patch leads from the sockets. You can make your own, but I'm guessing you are using solid core - not the best for patch leads. The ends don't crimp reliably and the cores don't like being rammed around.

Yes, using solid-core for the main runs, and patch leads will just be production ones that came with the various devices.

Yes B, the colours are marked on the back of the modules, run a pair of cables to each location even if you use only 1 you have a spare for when you need it - and no doubt you will

yep, wired the same both ends, in you case any x-overs if needed will be handled by the router/switch of course you can always add a access point to expand your wireless

Want to avoid wireless for the main things - the PC and tele. Always happier with wired

The wired cable returns a slightly better speed than using the 'powerline' adaptors - around 22Megs as opposed to usually just below 20.
