updates

Post by pistonbroke1957 »

For the last 3 days, when i turn off my computer it performs system updates.
Then when i turn it on again i get a message saying 'performing system configuration'
The updates to date total 520 and the computer seems to be getting slower and slower.
It's an Acer Aspire which is 3 years old, running Windows 7 Home Premium.
The only new program i've found is Microsoft Net Framework.4.5.1. which was installed
automatically with the first lot of updates and Maxthon, which i downloaded about a week ago
because Internet Explorer was getting so slow.
I've run a scan with AVG and Malwarebytes, neither of which have picked up any nasties.
I've just looked at the shut down icon and there are even more updates pending !
Any ideas anyone ?
cheers

If the OS install is fairly recent then you'll have a good load of updates to get and install (all automatically) - but you have to wait until it's all done before you notice your performance returning to normal. The background downloading process can make a difference to normal operation.

IE is cr@p anyway so consider Firefox or Chrome as better performing replacements.
Don't take it personally......

You can always turn off the update service in the action centre. Only problem with that is your computer might end up being a bit vulnerable in the future.

Whatever you do, don't mess with it while it's updating.

I did, and destroyed the Windows installation.

(if nipper ever comes home again he will hopefully sort it out for me).
One day it will all be firewood.

I think Microsoft have sorted the problems associated with inadvertently turning off the computer whilst the update is in progress now ayjay. Update now works slightly differently to the way it used to since WinXP I think it now writes the new update before removing a previous file. I know the missus turned her old XP computer off whilst it was updating (didn't notice the "Do not turn your computer off" sign when she'd closed it down and turned it off at the mains) and the result was a computer that would not load windoze whatsoever. However, two black eyes now serve as a reminder, never to do that to my computer.
