X box/wifi problem

Post by Chappy »

Hi All,
My son has found that his X box won't connect to the wifi from his bedroom, although it will work elsewhere in the house.
His bedroom is in an extended part of the house, so the wall between it and the rest of the house is the old external cavity wall.
Surely an X box will receive wifi through one cavity wall? (its only about 20 foot from the router).
Is there anything I can buy like a booster to resolve this?
I haven't a clue with bloody video consoles, and wish I'd never allowed it - his footballs are all flat and his bike is rusty because of this.... ::b

I don't have any games console, but you can get a wifi extender / booster from the usual places, even argos sell one.

I am wondering is an ethernet cable cheaper?

Edit:I just looked, a 10m long router cable is cheaper than a wifi extender / booster (Looking at argos)

Question. Can a smart mobile phone / tablet connect to wifi in the same room as where the games console is? If it can / gets a good signal I would check the settings on the games console.

Would you hit a nail with a shoe because you don't have a hammer? of course not, then why work on anything electrical without a means of testing Click Here to buy a "tester" just because it works, does NOT mean it is safe.

You'll probably find that the Xbox itself is in the line of sight of the wi-fi signal. But, as mentioned, a cabled connection is by far the faster and more reliable solution.
Don't take it personally......

We've got an ethernet cable and it works fine with that, but I'm not having a cable running along the landing into his room.....I'm paying for wifi !
He's had a 12 month xbox-live subscription for christmas, and now it doesn't work, I have to deal with the tantrums.
Guess I'll have to look into a booster then.

Is there any equipment inbetween/nearby that might be causing interference, e.g. microwave, cordless phone?

Maybe there is interference from a neighbour's Wi-Fi using the same channel.
You could try a different channel.

Is your wi-fi router running the latest firmware?

On some routers you can change the signal strength.
Yours may be set quite low.

Netgear are a decent make if you go for an extender.

The Xbox can display the relevant network information and you can also log on to your router (usually by running your web browser and typing 192.168.0.1 in the address bar) to see what else is connected and the ip addresses they are using - to check for conflicts.

I still reckon that rotating the Xbox 90 degrees will fix it.

XBox online was having problems yesterday due to a hacking attack.

That's probably the issue your son is having at the moment.

That was my first thought when I saw the subject line but the OP says it works OK elsewhere in the house and when using a cable.

Sorry, but as I first said, I don't have any games console, so as such I do not understand the following, chappy could you explain it to me please?
Chappy wrote:..I'm paying for wifi !
I was always under the impression wifi is free because it comes from your own router which has built in wifi. So if you connect via cable or wifi it makes no difference to the cost as it is part of your "internet usage allowance" How a device gets it makes no difference to the cost. (Since it is still using YOUR broad band)

Ps4 and xbox live consoles were both down yesterday. My boys got a ps4 and its servers are all down due to some prank by a group of Russians.
Carpentry,I can explain it to you but I cannot understand it for you.

It was a comment on the wireless bit (so I don't want to be using cables) rather than the cost bit. Sorry for the confusion!
We are going to try another wireless network adapter, borrowed from a friend. Also going to try different orientations/positions of the components. Boosters are about £25 so don't want to buy one unneccessarily.

Get him a set of powerline adapters and stop being so cheap

Playing over wifi is horrible because of the lag and ping issues. He will be fragged playing his games before he even knows where the bad guys are

wifi boosters can be had from ebay for less (I got mine (wireless N capable also) for around £12 from a UK seller and its coverage is far better than my skybroadband router...

That's not the point really. Wifi is pretty terrible for gaming. It's just too slow to respond. It's fine for most other things though
