Morning Campers
I have a 4 year old Acer desktop running Windows 7 Home Premium.
Over the last week or so,the start ups seem to be getting slower and slower.
After the initial turning on.Windows loads and the screen turns blue awaiting
the log on password.
Having logged on,the screen remains blue for anything up to 15 minutes,
with just the word welcome and a small rotating wheel next to it.
Once the screen changes to the normal display,everything appears to be working ok.
I run weekly Malware and AVG scans which show no threats.
Any ideas ?

Have you a disk clean up tool such as CCCleaner from piriform (Free) ???

Is that the same as a disc defragmenter ?

Nope, It clears out a shed load of cr@p that you don't need, Temporary files and stuff ... It will clear a lot of disk space if you've never run a cleaner before......

I think what wine~O is saying is that your computer is full of "rubbish" as in bits of this file, bits of that file, etc, which is why your anti-virus will not show them, because they are not a virus.

Disc de frag, just re-organises your disc allocation, it doesn't clean anything.

CC cleaner does clean all the odd bits of junk.

I found that toolwhiz is good and its free.
It will leave a floating link on your home page, but you right click on the link and turn it off.

Do let us know how you get on. It may(or may not) help to run your de-frag after CC cleaner to best utilise the space that CC cleaner free's up. (Depends how much free space you have.)

PRESS THE START BUTTON AND TYPE MSCONFIG IN THE SEARCH BAR AT THE BOTTOM
run the program then find the tab marked startup at the top.
have a good look through that list, everything ticked wil start running in the background every time you turn your pc on.

leave any antivirus on but turn everything else off then restart the pc

yup 90% of it is crap you dont need.
occasionally youll have something useful like antivirus or a program for your printer etc but most of it is useless

post the list here (or pm me) and i can help you pick whats important and what isnt

I wouldn't just turn them all off. There's stuff there that's needed.

Have you got a load of big files on the desktop? That can slow the startup process.

I always use msconfig to see what's running and what's stoppable. If you know what you're doing it's perfectly ok to do so.

It's up to you what you do with your computer of course. But as it says on that site, msconfig just turns things off. It doesn't allow you to set them to actually configure them for testing like using "Services" does.
If you just turn a load of stuff off at once you might give yourself all sorts of problems in the future. What one person does with their computer might be completely different to what another does, so may need different services.
I've used the settings on that site since XP times, and I've had no problems so far.

Agreed if you know what you are doing being the essence, as the OP has never run a basic disk clean up since having the 'Puter .... Do you really think it wise to use Msconfig ??
