Waterproof MDF used for boxing in wall hung toilet/sink

Hi,
Halfway through refurbing a bathroom. We went for wall hung sink and toilet and the plummer built a little false unit to house the cistern. Plan was to slot a bit of stone on top of the boxing and then just paint the boxing round the toilet and sink with maybe a little tiled skirting board
The boxing was built with the green waterproof/resistent MDF for the front and side panelling.
Now that it is in I wondered if it should be tiled or have some additional waterproofing. Had a bit of a google and can't see many places where MDF is either a good bathroom material or a good base for tiles.
You'll have figured out that I'm a novice at this point - had not idea when it went in that MDF might have limitations.
What do people think - Is waterproof MDF + bathroom paint enough for this location (I've got a 2.5yr old who is just about to be potty trained - probably be p!ssing all over the wall!). If not, is it possible to tile onto the MDF or will I need to get some of this rebuilt?
Thanks for any advice!
