Which plywood for bathroom floor tiling?
Hi all
I want to tile the floor in our bathroom, and have been reading around how to do this. I'm getting various answers, and am still not sure. The last thing I want to do is lay the tiles only for them to crack or break thanks to shoddy preparation.
I'll be laying on floorboards, and I've hear that I need 12 mm plywood as a minimum. The plywood needs to be WBP - would this type be OK?
https://www.roofingsuperstore.co.uk/pro ... -pefc.html
Alternatively, could I use this over a ply?
https://www.tilefixdirect.com/product/P ... Am5K8P8HAQ
The reason I ask is that there seem to be different grades of WBP plywood, including plywood that uses WBP glue but is itself not WBP, yet advertises itself as such. So I am a little paranoid that I will buy and lay something that is not really appropriate. I'll have to order online, since the main DIY places like Wikes don't seem to specify exactly what sort of plywood it is, only that it is structural or non-structural. I suppose I could go to as timber merchants when I have some time.
For now, I guess, that's really my main question. I think once I get this sorted I can work the rest out.
Many thanks for your time.

Re: Which plywood for bathroom floor tiling?
I am not an expert (you'd better wait for one of those to come along) but ceramic tiles, and especially the grout between them can be fraught in the long term. It isn't just the type of ply, it's also what the ply is going over - if there is any movement in the joists then the ply will flex as well.
So one answer is to go for the thickest, strongest, most substantial and inflexible ply that you can afford.

Re: Which plywood for bathroom floor tiling?
OK, but I still need WBP ply right? I'm boarding over floorboards and whilst not rock solid (a bit of squeeking where they continue into the bedroom) they are OK.
Thanks for your reply, and welcome too :)

I don't use ply but either 6m or 12mm cement board depending on the floor. Either Hardiebacker, Aquapanel or NoPly are available at most DIY sheds or Tile stores

Do I use adhesive to apply to floor boards?
Thanks for response

Cheers for this. Watching YouTube vid, they seem to use thinset or bonding mortar to stick backing board to floor. Seems excessive. Is this the recommended way?

I think Hardiebacker and Aquapanel recommend using tile adhesive. NoMorePly uses it's own glue. And all screwed down too.

DUKKABOARD
http://www.dukkaboard.com/Dukkaboard.php
https://www.tilingsupplies.co.uk/dukkab ... x-600-10mm
I used the 10mm in my bathroom, with some HEAVY porcelain 600x600 floor tiles and it has been fine for about 3 years now. Screwed down to floorboards about every 6" with #8x1" screws.
It cuts easily with a Stanley knife, and has a thin cement coating on each side that takes tiles very well. PLY is OK, but a bugger to cut. You WILL need flexible adhesive and flexible grout if you are laying over floor boards, irrespective of what you put down.
That no more ply looks good too.

Re: Which plywood for bathroom floor tiling?
I ended up buying and am now in the process of fitting acquapanel. I've managed to cut one 1200x900 a little short on one side, by one cm where the floor meets the skirting. Do I need to recut a new panel, or can I fill the space with a strip of acquapanel glued with tile adhesive or just fill with adhesive?
Many thanks.

I would, it's unlikely to get walked on is it! Just because I would though, doen't mean it's right.....................or can I fill the space with a strip of acquapanel glued with tile adhesive
I think you should be re fitting/replacing the skirting anyway shouldn't you? Tile floor first and then fit skirting?
What does the team think?

I would remove the skirting and tile first

Re: Which plywood for bathroom floor tiling?
Thanks. Oh dear, I've been cutting overboard with skirtings still in place. Hope that's not too much of an issue...
i've only cut 2 boards though. Could take skirting s up, board the rest and fill in what I've missed on first two boards?
