Which paint for my BBQ?

Post by Maz123 »

I think I've posted this in the right place... if not let me know.

I have a metal BBQ which unfortunately spent a winter with a torn cover so some of the paint has flaked and there are some areas of rust... So wondered if there was a paint I could use to smarten it up a bit. The paint will be exposed to the heat, as some of the areas are around where the coal goes.

I'll stop rambling now and hope that makes sense.

Thanks :-)

I used high temperature paint(I think it's for exhausts etc.) once and it worked very well. It was a while ago so it wouldn't surprise me if special Barbie paint is now obtainable.

High temperature paint is the thing to use, but beware, some are a lot more temperature resistant than others...

As with any painting, its all in the preperation, rub any rust and flaking paint down well, then paint.
Most have to be 'baked' within a certain time from application if you want it to work well.

I use black spray paint 'designed' for woodstoves to good effect. Well, it works perfectly on the woodstove and the exhaust pipe from it! Should do just fine on a BBQ.

There are, as mentioned, colour high temperature aerosols made for car exhausts and I recall using them some 30 years ago ( :? ) when I was into rebuilding Chevvy engines - sprayed the exhaust headers and it was 'bullet proof'.

Any particular brands you'd recommend?

Any idea what sort of temperature it'll need to withstand?

1,000 deg C

Car exhaust paints and woodstove sprays will do this.

@ LocksOnline. You really don't seem to understand the spirit of the forum. If you have a suggestion that will help, post it on the forum for the benefit of all.

One more post asking for personal contact and you'll be looking at a red card.

Funny thing. Years ago I used to run an old side valve BSA M21. They run quite hot. Normal "high temperature" cylinder paint hadn't used to last five minutes around the exhaust port, and I tried some chalk board paint I had. (Don't ask me why I tried it. Can't remember. Short arms and deep pockets probably. :-))
Anyway that lasted for ages.
