garden metal gate closing itself

Hello,
I have the front metal garden gate and when you open the gate it closes it self and when it rained and wet it closes quite fast itself .

Is there anyway to stop the gate closing itself, we have small children entering the front garden and i do not want them to be hurt by the gate closing it self.

Check the vertical alignment (hinges) and then any wear on the hinges that allow the gate to sag. You can compensate for the wear by adjusting the hinge location.

..........but as it closes by itself, will it also not stop the kids running strait into the road?

As KE, check the hinges are in line...

Cant tell what the setup is on the hinges (pic is a bit small) but they look like adjustable ones...You might be able to adjust slightly to stop it swinging.

Cracking way to get the kids to shut the bloody gate, next you'll be wanting to do away with door closers

We had a big chain fixed to the gate and post with a big weight (plough blade) in the middle, take your legs off if you didn't shut it.

Thank you for your replies.

How do i check vertical alignment (hinges) and how do i know if there is any wear on the hinges that allow the gate to sag. How do i adjus the hinge location or do i take the Hinge off and re drill in the new location.

Please see further pictures to see if you can help.

The hinges are adjustable by undoing the locking bolts on the hinge ( you may need to apply some penetrating oil first ) and move them along the threaded part of the hinge and re tighten and adjust accordingly until the gate shuts how you want it to.
I would start with the top hinge and tighten it up a tad then the bottom one I would loosen a tad , but I could be totally wrong and you will just have to experiment until it's right.
Oh yes, and remember to put some packing underneath the gate to take the weight while you are fiddling with the hinges.

The hinge pins need to be vertically in line from both orientations the same as the gate when it's open/shut

Which is the locking nut near to the hinge or near the gate. see Green and red line on picture to identify the locking nut.

How do i check the hinge pins need to be vertically in line from both orientations, as yo usaid they both needs to be the same.

Both, they pinch the bolt either side of the hinge

Undo the nut that's nearest the hinge pin ( green one ) a couple of turns, then tighten the other one ( red one ) to hold everything together .
Keep experimenting with the top and bottom hinge until you obtain the desired effect.

Gate does not close itself, i will have to wait when it rains to see if it does close itself, otherwise i will to adjust the locking nuts.
