How big are routers getting?

I've come into possession of a new toy and I've got to say, how big are broadband routers getting???

If you've got issues with range or lots of devices, then I dare say this is the router for you - but it comes at a cost, it's 200 quid!!!!!!

I'm currently using an Asus RT-AC66U (about 100 quid, in comparison) and I've got to say, I think I like the Asus better. The range of the Linksys though......erm, wow.

I've got it setup in my office, chucked on the floor while I was having a play and I had a wander outside to see how it faired up with a bit of distance. To say the range is fair, is an understatement. I've not got my other phone, so can't test the 5GHz, but I can only think it's going to be better around here. Lots of other people with wireless networks. I was SIX houses down the road and I was still connected to the network at around 35% quality of signal.

I think the winner for the Linksys is the USB3 port and the E-SATA port. If you have HDD's or want to share media or access your stuff while you are away from home (or in the home), then it offers some good features if you have an iPhone or Android.

I'll be sticking with my old faithful though, good try Linksys.

Sorry - no tool porn here. It's is in the nerd section......PPE is a set of 3" thick specs, hair grease and a leg height altering insert in your shoe so you don't trip.

It isn't that big some of the cisco enterprise stuff it massive, the new Netgear Nighthawk X6 is large and fugly

never had a issue with my draytek vpn router would be nice if it did a/c tho

Which Draytek is it?

The reason I went with the Asus was the OpenVPN and PPTP server built in. The linksys has NONE of that (other than via some shitty app), which is quite disappointing. It really has been dumbed down to the most simplistic levels.

I keep looking at the Ubiquity EdgeRouter products coupled with a dedicated access point as my next setup (or the Linksys setup as an AP, which would be ideal if I could still use the connected USB ports for content sharing).

The only issue with that setup, would be parting with cash
