hi guys

ive always been a makita kinda guy, but i`m swayed to the fien multitool range as they get a good rap.

any of you guys got any experience/opinions of multi tools and the best to got for?

IMHO they are all a much of a muchness... the thing that separates them are the blades...

trade or diy
occasional use or constant
what battery system do you
you will find many a time cordless will be more usefull

I seem to agree with wine-o all too often these days but he's right,they are all much the same. The higher priced branded models will have tool free blade changing but it's all about the blades,quality blades make all the difference.

The higher price models will also have a higher power rating and the trade/industrial "name" brands will last much, much longer than DIY models (as well as parts being available for a very long time), but you'd expect that anyway. I'm on my second Fein (the first one was stolen) and they've been absolutely unbreakable. Agreed about the blades, though. One thing to note about these tools is that they can and do get very, very hot in prolonged use - that and the fact that they are really NOISY

yea ive got a makita 18v model (iam a joiner) and it get really hot during constant use...so i`m getting a mains powered machine as i think it will cope better. The fein are good machines as are the makita same power rating makita are cheaper though and the cordless machine is brilliant but i just feel constant use is too much for a battery machine

is the makita mains not worth considering

Too much for the battery, maybe, but for the motor? I have a Fein FMM on the present job, as does my mate. The Site Manager has recently bought a Makita TM3010 which I've had a wee play with whilst one of the plumbers has a blue Bosch. I don't think there's much to choose between them TBH. It's a matter of taste/colour preference/dealer preference/brand loyalty, etc Incidentally they all get hot in use, so I think it's just a fact of life (anyway 30,000 oscillations/minute would make me hot as well....). The only thing I'd recommend further is that you go for one with a quick release tool change. Doesn't cost a lot more, but the added convenience is well worth the small extra amount of money it will cost you over the basic, Allen-key models

I have the Fein mains powered one and it too gets hot - so hot that it is almost too hot to hold if used for long enough, so be warned..
I guess I am using it way beyond its intended use but it has survived several bouts of maybe 80-90 minutes constant use without complaining so far...

I can tell you that the same goes for the Bosch GOP and the Makita TM3010 as well...... My Fein is now 6 years old and it hasn't died yet, so......

Hi, I purchased an Einhell corded red 220w oscillating multi tool this week for the sole purpose of removing the discoloured grout from my shower cubicle. After only an hour and a half it cut out never to start again. Having first checked the power and plug top fuse, it was obvious that the tool was at fault. There is no internal overload cut in the manual so I have returned it to the shop of purchase and am awaiting a replacement . My point is that my confidence/ trust in this make is now zero. I am a tradesman and always buy Bosch but for a once in a long while tool that i will rarely use I thought £50.00 was an acceptable price to pay ( not throw away). There is not a lot on this brand apart from sales info.
I hope that the replacement lasts longer than the first. Will keep you posted.

I paid £30 for an Aldi one, not mamanged to break it yet. My father paid the same for the Lidl one, his is also still going strong. This for DIY use, trade would be different so it depends how much work you plan to do.

My challenge 240v multi tool has been severely abused for nearly a year now and it's still going strong!
25 quid I think it cost.
I burned a Bosch one out in a few months.

I'm a keen DIYer and didn't hesitate simply going for the Fein; the lever for the tool change is absolutely vicious. I think Fein invented these multi tools? My Fein sits in its case under the bench most of the time but when it's needed it's needed badly. The biggest job I used the Fein on was to remove the sealed double glazing units from their wooden frames to the bungalow front a couple of years ago; it was brilliant.

I wanted to buy the Fein at our local store but they wanted over £240 for it including the kit; I ended up buying online for £200 including next day free delivery; our local store refused the £220 I had in cash on me.

Agreed with you there, Col, not a tool I need much but when I do it's because nothing else can/will do the job. Also agreed on how "keen" the Fein blade holding is - but at least you'll not worry about losing a blade!
