Urgent Help Please

Post by dewaltdisney »

I am doing a slide show tomorrow and it is the first time I have used my new HP Pavilion 17 Notebook windows 10 laptop and I have just realised that there is no D-SUB 15 pin RGB cable connector to get the laptop to talk to the projector. I just cannot figure how to get round this. Is there such thing as a connector that converts to an HDMI or a USB?

Any advice greatly received

HDMI to VGA converters do exist and aren't expensive however finding one locally might be a problem (given you timescale). Google is your friend but I don't know where you're shops are and only Amazon show in the main results I've checked so far.

Might be wise to put the presentation on a USB key and either check the premises that is hosting the presentation if they have a generic laptop they use for such things. Alternatively find a friend who can loan you a laptop.

Thanks for that KE, yes I saw the adaptor leads on Amazon but time does not allow for this as a fix. Desperate measures are needed and I have reassembled my old laptop, that has the VGA port, by replacing the memory cards and HDD that I had stripped out with a view to scrapping it. Fortunately I had lost interest and stuffed the bits in a drawer so I was able to tinker with it and get it working. The problem I have is that the screen is somewhat knackered in that I have taped it together and after wafting it about I get a picture. Of course once the projector is attached I can use the projected image as a additional monitor so I can get the slide show running on Powerpoint which is installed.

So fingers crossed I hope it all comes together tomorrow night.....gulp

DWD - just don't panic.

If you know your stuff (and I'm pretty damned sure you DO!) the you'll breeze it - with or without a projector. I can say this from experience as I used to teach in colleges (did it for 7 years) and despite many occasions where notes, displays, demonstrations etc went mammaries skywards, somehow you ALWAYS mange to fudge through

Anyway, there's always 'next time'.......

Thanks KE, this is a local history talk I am doing for free to a local group and I can do it without prompts so I could get by if it all goes wrong, it is just that pictures make it come to life for the audience. As I always say, no good deed ever goes unpunished

I had a total failure, I'm sure I posted about it.....had a fully staged server, virtual clients and a days worth of training for about 100+ people.

Tested, tested and tested it to ensure it worked. As it was about 2k's worth of server, I clearly can't go buying another as a backup.

Got to the place, the room filled up, booted it up and the virtual images were destroyed. That was a fun day.

What's the model of laptop DWD? Sorry I'm a bit late, but K_E has obviously said what's what.

A lot of modern laptops have weird looking ports called "Display Port". It's usually got a D++ next to it. You can get adaptors from most shops like Maplin or PC World quite readily.

They will do Display port to VGA/HDMI and DVI - handy to have in the bag. Good luck!

Thanks for that Billy, this is my laptop http://www.pcworldbusiness.co.uk/catalo ... m/N128172W

I cannot see any ports with DD+. The problem is that the projector I borrowed does not have anything other than VGA connector and an S Video input. There is a square USB port marked 'mouse' and I tried this with a square to flat USB but my PC could not detect a connection.

This talk sounded a good idea back in January when I was booked

Is there any way you can connect via the HDMI port with a converter?

I don't really know what I'm talking about, but just looked at you laptop's spec.

Thanks Dave, too late now as I am just about to get going. I am reasonably happy that my old lappy will deliver, it has a bloody big bulldog clip holding the screen together

I will report back later :thumbright:

Bloody hell, 8 slides in and the computer shuts down, there must be a defect in the charger. Fortunately I was able to wing it just talking and the 40 odd people who were there all came up after and said how much they enjoyed it. From a personal point I was pissed off to be let down by the equipment but I only got the borrowed projector yesterday and it was too late to get it sorted properly. The irony is that it all worked perfectly in my test run through earlier but sods law prevails and of course it was not helped by the fact that it is Friday 13th.

Ah well chalk it up to experience. Thanks again for the help guys
