BBC News or BBC Sport?

Hi,

OK so I dislike sport with a passion but why the heck do I get sport forced upon me each time To want to watch BBC1 News? This morning 7 am; switch TV on for BBC 1 News; swimming then onto cycling; turn off in disgust at 7:10 sick of hearing about sport; switch back on at 7:15 am still banging on about sport so switch off and leave switched off; why not simply call it BBC Sport then I wouldn't bother switching it on at all.

Parked in Aldi car park awaiting the store opening switch on BBC4 on the car radio; switch off again because I'm being truly wound up with nothing but sport; I HATE SPORT.

I enjoy all aspects of DIY; metal and woodworking but I wonder what would be said if BBC 1 News showed someone cutting a Mortice & Tenon joint or doing a bit of welding? Time we had fair play?

Bron and I have just been to Carole's Crafts in Batley; the escalator was broken down so we had to use the small lift going up and down like a yo-yo.

Back home the washing machine has just started to leak.

Yesterday I trimmed lots of laurels in readiness for a trip to the tip today; the laurels are now a soaking wet pile.

I feel much better for that.

I've just spent a while filling in a complaint to BBC then tried to send; please see below; GRRRRRRRRRR.

I agree. News, and sports news are two separate things. I don't generally want the sports news either.

I really do wonder how much the BBC pay for all this sports coverage. Sometimes it seems that all there is on there is sport and opera!

Having said that I've watched a bit of the Olympics, although like you Col I don't have much real interest. The BBC have plenty of channels, so why can't they stick the sport away on one or two of them, so that we don't have to have it rammed down our throats at every opportunity.

And of course the endless, and mostly pointless discussions before and after every event.

I was miffed because BBC4 seems dedicated to the bleeding Olympics and the episode of Beck, which we like, on Saturday night was dropped. Grrrrr.

I have no real interest in the Olympics, and Brazil seems like a dead duck after London.

Now if they had an event like the 500 metre dash by the mugger combined with the shooting that would be worth a watch.

I like sport.

I don't mind seeing the usual major sports news on the main news programmes but I do want to see the national and international news as well.

The BBC getout would be that the morning programme is not called "The News" it's called "Breakfast".

Even without the intrusion of the Olympics it's usually plagued with items which are made for daytime TV which all come with the abominable musical background - that is my real pet hate with all TV these days, everything has to have music in the background.........and there's not enough sport!

If you like sport that's fair enough ayjay. The BBC has to cater for everyone. I just wish they'd realise not everyone does like it though.
There's no escape from it! Football, cricket, (football), wombledon, rugby, golf, (football), athletics, cycling, car racing, (football) and repeat. Endlessy!
They have eight terrestrial channels plus BBC3

Why can't they have a couple just for sport?

I'd be quite happy for the BBC to split their license fee up into two parts. One to access just the "non-sport" content, and another to access the sport.
That'd be fair IMO, as long as the charges truly reflected the cost of each part.
It won't happen of course.

The BBC now have EIGHT dedicated channels for the Olympics on freesat - that doesn't included their constant coverage on their main channels BBC1, 2 and 4. Then there is the News channel coverage as you point out Col.

The BBC do however like the sound of their own voice and their news coverage is so dire that replacing the majority of its content with soporific articles instead of informing the public of how the REAL world is collapsing around them suits their agenda perfectly.

Just as well you don;t have to pay their exorbitant licence fee

Thanks for your replies guys; it's good to know I'm not alone; I was beginning to think I was turning into an old moaning codger.

Thanks for the information ayjay; I always considered BBC 1 to be the main news channel so if it's now called breakfast then I've lost my appetite?

I couldn't be paid to watch sport after all I can find better things to do than watch two people knock a ball over a net or throw darts into a board; I'd much prefer to watch my newly applied paint dry.

If only the same time; effort and money was put into something useful like industry the UK would be on top of the pile again. I seldom switch on BBC 1 because Bron and I prefer to watch chosen programmes through YouTube and even these are now being invaded with adverts.

It's not good enough watching sport once but the action replays really rub it in as does all the crying by managers because their team lost? How come sport even invades the weather forecast; I don't care if it's going to rain at Wimbledon?

What sort of subject is "sports science" what next; tennis science or football science what about real jobs with real apprenticeships? Where are the Isambard Kingdom Brunel's these days? Sport used to be sport now it's just high finance?

I might have mentioned previously I detest sport?

During the day you could try Freeview Channel 130 - it's BBC News 24 - unfortunately they also broadcast the Breakfast programme in the mornings to coincide with BBC1. .............try Radio 4.

Thanks ayjay for your suggestions. I think the best thing for me to do is to stop tormenting myself by trying to watch BBC 1 News totally ignoring it in future. I stopped listening to radio channels ages ago because the presenters were too full of themselves; this also applies to The eurovision song contest on TV; I thought Wogan should have had a gagging order on him but it's now just as bad without him; best thing I can do is to load favourite music to a stick to play in the Yeti and carry on viewing YouTube videos through the TV.

Modern films/movies are a waste of film; bad language; violence and no story; I'm becoming less tolerant with age; this is the grumpy corner so just call me grumpy?

Today hasn't been all bad though even if it did get off to a bad start. I fully loaded the Yeti with laurel debris and visited the tip; as I approached the tip entrance there were about six cars ahead of me and the gates were closed; perfect timing for when the staff were compacting and moving skips around; after a good long wait I finally tipped but just as I was about to set off a big tractor with a trailer full of hay drove out of an adjoining field directly in front of me; by the time I arrived home the Yeti looked like it had been driven through an haystack; oh hum things just don't change.

you wouldnt like it at my house col haha... my sister is a senior broadcast journalist for bbc newcastle and is very very pro bbc

and when i wake on a morning i normally have bbc breakfast on or sky sports news. sometimes sky sports news after ive seen whats going on in the world.

when a major sporting event such as the olympics is on then thats on pretty much all the time. if the cricket world cup is on. or the rugby world cup... or the football world cup or what ever...

basically pretty much any sporting event and its on.

I'm fairly ambivalent about sport , some I can watch but a lot I don't . I enjoy cycling , for instance, but find it tedious to watch and think several other sports are the same. I do agree coverage is over the top.

I also enjoy practical skills but acknowledge that it can be hard to get across. The Tudor/Victorian /wartime farm series did a good job and then there was James May's effort the Reassembler which promised to be good but was frankly quite dull.

yea im pretty certain watching some dude cutting a m&t joint would be considered extremely dull by 99% of the population to be honest. however much we all would be liking to watch stuff like that.

for me i as much enjoy the celebrations as much as watching the sports men or women achieve their often life long aims. as to be fair most sportspeople are relatively young. most being retired by the time theyre mid 30's

i totally and fully appreciate the dedication to the sport these guys must undertake.

for example i was watching earlier the syncronised diving when tom daley and his mate won the bronze medal. who on earth thinks i know lets be a syncronised diver.... but people do. and practice and practice and then practice some more. all the traveling they must do, all the coaching. all the early mornings.

and then they get the bronze medal and you see how much it means to them to get the medal theyve worked so hard to get.

and to be honest ive never ever seen a football teams manager cry when his team has been beaten. ive seen them lose their tempers. go mental. be extremely passive. be downright crazy such as joe kinnear when he launched into his rant when he was newcastle manager...

i guess you do see sometimes players or sportsmen or women in general being all emotional. but im sure its all part of the buzz they all get from competing and being the best they can be. or being so wrapped up in what they do.

personally i love the celebration part of it as much as the sports act itself

top of my head example is kelly holmes from a couple of olympic games ago when she expected to get the silver and realused she got the gold medal. fantastic scenes.

makes me sick of my life to currently be injured and unable to do my sport (football for a laugh with my mates)

one thing i seriously dont like about sport is the cheaters that use all the performance enhancing drugs..... be the best you can if its not good enough then fair enough. but dont use sh*t to be better than what you normally could be. imagine if there was like some mad pills you could take that allowed you to be a totally purely mint joiner or plasterer or plumber or whatever. like better than your skills would normally allow you to be
