I've trimmed the top of my conifers and I am now left with the tops of the trunks which are too big for my loppers.

I have an old bow saw but it keeps getting stuck fast part way into the trunk.

Any tips on using the bow saw or would I be better getting a different tool for the job.

It depends on how you're cutting it: any piece of timber will bind up on any saw blade if you support in two places and try to cut it between the two supports.

If it's just laid on the ground the same rule applies, you would need to lift one end and insert a prop of some description, then cut on the dangly side of the prop.

Bowsaws are not precise instruments, if the blade is old and blunt and requires forcing it could be going off track which will also cause problems.

Do not be tempted to use a chainsaw, that will certainly lead to disaster. The thing is that those trunks are very heavy and you should work down from the top cutting off smaller sections that you can push safely off when cut through. This would be a load of work and I would strongly advise you getting a tree surgeon (not a pikey) to do it for you as they will cart the wood away and sell the logs on. I would reckon they would charge between £100 and £150 but you will be safe more importantly. :thumbright:

Do what I did to a tree. Cut a bit off every week. Took a couple of months but it worked.
