Broad band Use

Post by Someone-Else »

I have 45GB usage / month. It resets at 00:00 every new month (Yesterday morning)
I have a new phone app from my BB provider (BT) that shows how much I have used. It already says 3GB has been used.
If I / we sat watching videos all the time I could understand it, but we don't.

I am wondering what could be using so much? or do you think 3GB is not a lot?

I have turned off all but one phones wifi, (it has no contract)
Have now set time limit on both pc's internet access time (Via router)

Any suggestions as to what is using so much? or is there a "logging programme?" Just cleared all pc history and will check in a day or two to see what has been looked at.

Any other ideas / suggestions most welcome.

Background updates from Microsoft could be a good culprit

If you are running Win10 then that could easily make up that use in short order, there was a recent major update that has been rolling out.

Some idea of what I use:
August - 90Gb
Sept. - 45Gb

I'm already at 50Gb this month. (Don't know why but I'm guessing Win 10)
That's one desktop, couple of tablets, and Netflix through a Chromecast. All used a fair bit.
August I built a new desktop, and installed Win 10, so I did a lot of downloading.

With Win 10, and streaming video these days I wouldn't accept a cap on use. Mine's with Plusnet and unlimited.

Yes, it's PROGRAM, not programme - you can thank me later!

Interesting, and thanks, yes I do have win 10. But something must be using the data..............

I sometimes wonder if its BT saying I have used more than I actually have used.

What limit do you have? Unlimited broadband(not fibre I may add) costs me a fiver a month(+17.99 line rental)
Surely it's not worth not having unlimited broadband at a fiver a month?

Sorry I've just re read the original post and it's 45g limit.

win 10 ? A fair bit is windows telemetry, download and install spybot anti beacon and stop Microsoft spying on you, This is only one of a hand full of anti beacon type programs that's not full of spyware itself

I just can't see the point these days in having a capped package when there are so many others on offer that are unlimited.
I remember what a PIA it was having a limit. The world has moved on from that.
There are plenty to choose from that aren't limited.

Thanks everyone. {Global thanks button}

I do appreciate your replies, but here is what is annoying. (and more info)

Don't have tv or sat box connected to web or phone line or wi-fi (Don't use interactive stuff on sky)

About 3 months ago I upgraded to 45gb / month as I was on something like 30gb / month which we did get close to but never reached. Last month I received several emails (from BT) saying I am close to my limit, then really close to my limit then the month ran out so it starts again.

I did turn off wi-fi on the ipods, and my mobile and the spare mobile and so far we have "used" just under 5gb but how? (rhetorical question) all we do is surf forums, and use facebook and emails, hardly watch youtube compared to how often I used to watch it.

I just checked and there are only 2 pc using BB at the minute and I am on this one and the other one is doing a few emails.

I cant change BB provider (yet) as I am in a 12 month contract.

I also like BT as the phone options we get are very handy, and if we could change to say plusnet, they use the BT line anyway and you have to call them who then call open reach if there is a problem. as it stands now we can contact open reach direct.

I have also looked at the BT page and it says we can upgrade to........fibre unlimited BB  But we have fibre BB
Think I am going to have to call BT and speak to a person.

Thanks again all.

I am probably wrong with this but....
Do BT not have a thing where customers who have registered their mobile phone get to piggyback other BT customers WiFi, maybe you are not using your data but others are?
