Offside front antiroll bar link question...

Post by KCarter90 »

Hi there,

I've just had my MOT Completed and it failed fairly bad.
But my question is in relation to one of the items specifically.
Last year's MOT, it failed on.. & I'll quote this word for word 'Suspension link - excessive play in offside front antiroll bar link' which I paid £68.95 to repair.
This year's MOT, it failed on the same thing. It's quoted the same on the report... (they also increased their repair price to £75.99)
So, is it possible that it's a different specific problem & yet written the same on the report? Or, is there any chance that the same thing has worn down, broken etc. to a point of failure, in just one year?
& just to note, i used Halfords Autocentre both years.

Any advice would be great.
Thanks in advance.

Sometimes called 'drop-links' The types of roads you drive on will have an effect on these, if you have a lot of potholes or speed bumps on your regular routes, that will reduce the life of them dramatically.
I'd hope for at least a year out of a mid range replacement drop link on average roads/mileage.

£75.99 sounds on the expensive side just to replace one to me though.... £10 part, £65.99 for half an hours work...
Probably cheaper than a main dealer price mind

Certain vehicles munch through them, especially on bumpy roads and if it's a cheapo motor factor part that's been fitted then yeah it'll fail pretty quickly.
75.99 is daylight robbery as well.
Out of curiosity what car is it you have?
Carpentry,I can explain it to you but I cannot understand it for you.

I bet they used a cheap pattern part Chinese made link - that job should be no more than £50 all in - as with all suspension related items ideally should do them as an axel pair ie. both sides

imho find a good independent garage in your area - with a ramp 20-30 mins max to do both sides - 10 mins for tea, maybe a hour to diy it on your drive if that way inclined depending on the car of course

some thing like a corsa or clio, drop links are under a tenner - maybe £15

I'd take the car to a proper garage for repair.. Halfords are OK for some stuff.

Look up a garage near you that is a member of the "good garage scheme"
