I might be moving into a flat in the basement of a big house where my friend lives in the flat on the top (second) floor.

She's got broadband and I'm hoping to take a Cat5 cable from a socket on her router down through the house to the basement so I can fit an RJ45 socket there from which I can take a Cat5 cable to my computer and maybe some kind of wi-fi device too for my tablet.

Does this sound feasible?

Also, I'd like an intercom so we can communicate - a basic wired one (I guess a separate cable can go with the Cat5) but not the kind that is normally used to go from a flat to the main door, more like a dedicated "phone" handset at each end. Anyone got any recommendations for the intercom - I've looked and found a few very cheap ones but I'm happy to spend £100 or so for a quality one.

If it was me, I'd just do as you suggest - drop a cat5 out and down and connect to an ACCESS POINT if you just want wireless or a router that can be configured as an access point (which would then give you wireless AND 3 ports for wired devices).

Don't go straight into a router, as you'll end up with two DHCP servers, double NAT, issues with apps.

As for talking.....if you've got internet, why not just use your phones - Skype, Whatsapp, etc - saves additional cabling, expense and hassle.

its easy enough, 2 drops of CAT 5E (1 for intercom the other for networking), a simple wired network switch and a access point on your end - are these proper flats or just a room in a shared house (one electric meter and fuse board), if its just a house, a powerline kit will do the job without the need for running cables

They are "proper" separate flats with separate electrics so powerline is out of the question - not that I like them anyway.

I'd prefer a proper wired intercom to WhatsApp etc as it would be distinctive and separate and would get attention rather than being lost amongst all the other "noise"!
