We wanted a little side table to go at the end of the sofa, something to match the other furniture I made a while ago, so knocked this up over the Christmas break. :)

5 sections plasma cut from 3mm thick steel sheet, fixing tabs folded, then strips welded on to join them.
A quick burnish and lick of matt black...
Timber sections kncked up, waxed and screwed on...

Yes, certainly is. Subtly changed at the top to accommodate the table top. Other than that, I tried to keep it as near as practical.

Many thanks Hitch yes would appreciate the video please. Top job on the table and immediately I saw it I too thought "Ironbridge" what type of fork-truck do you move it around on? You must have had a heck of a lot of waste from the steel sheets but it sure looks worth it seeing the end result; I bet you spent ages fettling the sharp edges. full credit to you; beautiful and functional whilst being truly unique.

Wastage wasn't much really, all 5pieces came from less than half of a 2x1m sheet of 3mm. Nested inside each other to save wastage. The sheet is pretty cheap, about £25/30 for a whole sheet.

The cut was pretty clean tbh, a few bits just to knock off with a file here and there, then to ease the edges slightly I just worked a twist knot cup brush over the sections. If u was to make another I'd probably pay slightly more attention to cleaning up the cuts. Once the tabs were folded I just tacked it all together starting at the middle and worked out using a piece of box section as a spacer. A quick coat of primer followed by some matt black. Took me about 3 hours to make and paint the metalwork. That's excluding doing Cad.

I wouldn't have a hand anywhere near that beast...

No real issues, if the head gets knocked by a piece of metal or hand or whatever, it stops dead in its tracks... and can be a pain to restart in exactly the right place, hence wanting to get the piece out of the way quickly. No issues from the arc either, the bit you dont want your hand in the way of is under the electrode- where the sheet it. Small lightweight part too, so not much heat in the pieces. Normally its ran with water in the table which keeps it cooler still, and absorbs the fume.

Interesting video. I've not seen one working. They're after my time in industry.
I know they had one where my mate worked until he retired. He says it's impressive both from what can be done, and the finish.
The nearest we came where I worked was one of those little wheeled device that carried a burning head and ran on a length of track!
