DIY - Tiling over Orby backboard using dowel fixings?

Hi folks,
DIY'er here. I'm doing up our bathroom and have installed Orby boards as per the manufacturer instructions http://www.orbry.com/pdf/orbry-solid-wa ... -guide.pdf
My question is - the mechanical fixings protrude from the boards by about 2mm and my concern is that these will prevent me getting a good contact with the adhesive in places with a 6mm notched trowel that I was recommended for the job. My tiles are 400mm x 200mm and are 7mm thick. I'll be using bagged adhesive and want to get this right first time.
I was wondering if a 10mm notch would be more suitable and give me better adhesive coverage on the back of the tile?
Any advise would be fantastic.
