Tiling onto tiles

Hi,

What is your view on tiling onto existing tiles?

The current tiles are soundly put on and I've been informed that they need to be cleaned of any grease using sugersoap.

I did it 20 years ago and I always regretted it. Not for any other reason that I know it is there and I wished I had not done it. Back when I did it I was faced with a long old job with a club hammer and bolster, it was a fully tiled bathroom, and as it was quite usual to do over tile jobs in those days I did it.

I made a scratch block up with masonry nails and keyed up the surface of the tiles. I gave it a clean down with methylated spirits as I recall. The tiles have stuck on well over that time and I have had no issues and it is coming to the point where I really want to do it over again.

Nowadays taking tiles off is so much easier with an SDS chisel action drill and a tile lifter bit. I did a kitchen tile removal the other day and it took around an hour, which included the clean up. Use gloves, eye protection and a mask as tiny slivers of tile can break out. Have a clear out strategy as the tiles are heavy and bulky so see where you can dispose of them locally.

So which mapei product should i use to tile. There's so many to choose from.

I went to screwfix they weren't much help.

The tiles are are ceramic and have the following dimensions 27cm * 36cm.

I like BAL adhesives http://www.bal-adhesives.com/homeowners ... =adhesives

If you are going ahead with tiling over tiling all of these shown will work. I have used the Green Star for tiling recently and that was nice to use. A pro tiler will always mix their own adhesive from powder but if you are not experienced it is difficult to get the consistency right and batch variations so you might be better off with the BAL ready mixed.

Never use the tile and grout products and take the time to mix the grout up yourself. I find the Mapei coloured grouts and sealants excellent. I use this firm for tile trim and the corners http://www.protilertools.co.uk/tile-tri ... im-corners the corners make a neat and professional job and it beats trying too cut a three way mitre on window reveals.

Screwfix are OK if you know what you need; they can't offer advice on tiling though.

With those sizes a ready mixed (tubbed) adhesive will be a no-no. You'll need a powder that you mix yourself.

If you are not experienced at tiling you'll want a slower setting addy. Couldn't find one on S/Fix but Topps tiles do an own brand addy that has an extended open time...
