Broadband speed update

Just had our latest BT bill in and discovered we're paying £40/month for our 'unlimited' broadband connection.
Out of curiosity I Googled 'average UK download speeds' and found that Offcom research revealed that the AVERAGE download speed went up from circa 22Mb/s to 28Mb/s in 2016.
Mine comes in at TWO Mb/s
and has done for the last EIGHT YEARS.
You can only image the Mr Angry letter I've written to BT demanding a refund
How does your current download speed compare?

Plusnet FTTC. Just tested it. 37.56 down, 1.9 up. Before we had the option of fibre a couple or so years back I was getting about the same as you. Cornwall was one of the first areas to get "Superfast" Broadband apparently. They still haven't managed "proper" fibre though, it's all FTTC.
Basically it's as we had modern cars, but only cart tracks for them to drive on.
Mind you the roads in Cornwall are a bit like that anyway!
Comes in around £37 a month all in with "free" anytime phone calls. A quid for the caller display, and another £3 for "free" mobile calls.

Upload is 0.38Mbs here - and given how often Mrs updates her website it's a right PITA....
ISTR I asked (and got) a reduction in broadband fees a couple of years ago but they seem to have snuck the number back up again...... tw@ts

It's just about time for me to haggle with BT. I've a month before renewing and if it's not around the same as I'm paying I'll just go elsewhere.

Depends where you live Stevie as far as I can see. If you live in (usually) towns or suburbs, it's a lot cheaper than rural places.

True, haggling politely when it's time to renew is always a winner. They never want to lose the custom and always offer at least a new customer deal.

When I first had the fibre, it was quite a bit more expensive, but after 12 months (IIRC) they actually phoned me and told me it would be cheaper. I tried a gentle haggle, but they wouldn't have it.
For the area I live in, it's not that bad speed/price. looking at what else is on offer, the really cheap prices just aren't available here.
I've been generally happy with Plusnet. When we've had the occasional problem they've got it sorted pretty quick.

The only real reason for that increase is that more people are signing up for fiber ... I doubt you'll hear anything positive back from your "Mr. Angry" letter.

when you say 2mb is that download speed or line speed, 10mb of line speed equates to 1.1-1.2Mb/sec download speed
BT have restructured some of there pricing to inc line rental
run a bt line test and see what it comes back with and what your line is profiled at.
