We are having a rear extension done and as the house is on a slope there will be a raised terrace (full width of property (7m) and going out 2m. It will be approximately 1m from the garden level so needs ballustrades to comply with building control.
We have found glass railings wth poles at 1m intervals, but the cost with railings along the stairs going down to the garden level is coming in at around £3000 including fitting. We would love a glass infinity system but that would cost even more. And as the floor tiles are porcelain (limed oak) and the side wall adjacent to our neighbour is brick we think wood might be a better choice and also a lot cheaper. We would like hardwood and would like ideas of places where we can source these from please.

Re: Wood or glass ballustrades?
if you are closely overlooked you probably wont get planning permission if its higher than 300mm above ground level at the highest point
have you applied for planning permission ??

Re: Wood or glass ballustrades?
There are many different hardwoods which would be suitable for your purpose, but of course not all would be to your liking.
Most are available from several outlets on-line and appear to start at about £133 per linear metre.
An example of suppliers as follows:-

I also feel that it would be a good idea to get a price for supply & fix from a local joiner. This would at least give you an idea of the hardwood price comparrisson to the glass alternative.

excellent worth checking as it catches many people outLike_knowlege wrote:Yes I have got full planning permission so they are no issues
people often dont realize that building regs and planning permission are seperate and complying with one you still need to comply with the other seperatly and jointly in many instances

Re: Wood or glass ballustrades?
we have gone with stainless steel wire rope and wood the wire looks very good and all in for 5 x 3.5m was about £300. I did the wire and fittings and wood posts etc which obviously helped but looks great.
