Best Lavender - any suggestions

Hi folks,
I am looking for resilient, fairly bushy growing lavender which the Beechgrove on the BBC were suggesting on Fri could be used as low hedging style division of gardens, sadly they only mentioned using an older variety but they didn't mention any names!
Background story:
My wife and I would like to break up the front view of our house, it has a large "terraced" area which is pretty well drained.
We would like to build 2 long sleeper planters and fill with something suitable and preferably fairly low maintenance.
The planters will be approx 2.4m x 0.6m wide and about 30cm max off the ground.
Our house is quite exposed to the elements and I did initially look at grasses so whether or not the grass and lavender could be combined or just the lavender on its own, I am open to suggestions or any help at all really!
