if Hitachi are changing their name to Hikoki and customers don't realise, will they go to another big brand thinking Hikoki is one of those cheap unknown makes.

And is there any truth in the thing I've read a time or two about old time French polishers being a bit fond of a drink?

As an apprentice I spent 6 months upstairs in the finishing shop. There were three old boys up there - and by old I mean 70+ - who ruled the roost. To a man they all had big red hooters and the blood vessels were visible in their cheeks - sure signs of regular boozers. Funny thing is, they didn't drink. I reckon it was all those years spent French polishing (for the uninitiated French polish is shellac, a secretion of the lac beetle, dissolved in methyl alcohol - or meths - once a favourite of certain classes of down and out) and breathing in the meths fumes. I'm surprised that they didn't all have cirrhosis of the liver, or equally that they hadn't burned the place down because they were in the habit of smoking like chimneys whilst polishing! Oh, hold on, the polishing shop had burned down before - which is why it was upstairs in a separate building......

Can you imagine allowing smoking around all that meths these days?
Or in a woodworking shop for that matter. The mind boggles.

If you're French polishing you do get sick of the smell of the meths.
Been a long time since I've done any.
I wouldn't call myself a "polisher" either really.

Neither would I. I remember the old guys used to keep the cigarette ash - mixed with vinegar into a paste it was used as a polish rejuvenator.....

The one time they didn't smoke was when they were spraying - especially pre-catalysed or cellulose finishes. Good job, too.

I used to do a lot of laminating at one time, whole rooms sometimes, walls and ceilings with full sheets of Formica. A couple of pints of Evostick spread out with a broom when we were in a rush.

I don't know how people could sniff the stuff in paper bags, (although that particular trend came much later), we would go to the pub at lunchtime and after half a pint you knew you'd had enough, not to mention the blinding headache afterwards.

Worst place I did was a theatre, everything we did there was underground, so no windows or fresh air at all. Fortunately I do quite like the smell of Evo.

As for the Hitachi, their later stuff looks very vulgar to me, I'm glad I got my circular saw while they were still just green, I wouldn't have bought one of those garish jobs
