Windows 10 Update 3/12/17
My Windows 10 system updated yesterday and it took around 3 hours. The download took around 2 hours and then the restart fell through loads of 'loading update' cycles. When it was done as far as I can see there is some gadget in Paint for 3d and some speech to text enhancements.
I am sure there must be a load of other stuff but be warned that this takes bleedin' ages. If I had know I would have wired my laptop to the Ethernet cable from the router.

Re: Windows 10 Update 3/12/17
that's odd both my laptop and main desktop downloaded the update in the back ground, 2-3 min to update and shut down, Then 4-5 min's with 2 restarts
you may of just hit a peak time or have slow internet

Sounds like the "Creator's update" It seemed to decide it needed to download more stuff on mine halfway through. Luckily it's a reasonably fast connection. Lots of restarts as well. Took about half an hour on this desktop machine IIRC.

Probably took an hour or two on my laptops, very annoying as there was no forewarning that it would be such a big update. In general I hate the way updates are performed on Win10, several times now it has disrupted my workflow.

I think that Creators thing is what it updated mine with Dave. I must say normally my laptop updates itself during the night as I leave it in in sleep mode. This is the first time I noticed that it was doing an update in the day unannounced so to speak. It was a bleedin' nuisance with no apparent gain for me.

Yes, I hate the "Nursey knows best" attitude of the updates. It actually forked up something I was doing when it decided it had to do that update. Can't it offer a more convenient time to do it? It used to.
I suppose it confirms what I think about anything that is "free"
The attitude of the provider tends to be "It's free. Take it or leave it"

I'm not on Win 10 (Win 7), but from - Control Panel - Windows Updates - can you not change the settings to "Check for updates but let me choose whether to download and install them"?
You can on Win 7.
You can on Win 7.
One day it will all be firewood.

Must have stopped working on my machine then.Bob225 wrote:That's odd the notification centre on both my machines prompted me
But TBH, while the OS itself seems pretty good, and stable enough, updates seem a bit haphazard. Certainly no notifications at all the last few updates.

No you can't turn it off on Win 10.ayjay wrote:I'm not on Win 10 (Win 7), but from - Control Panel - Windows Updates - can you not change the settings to "Check for updates but let me choose whether to download and install them"?
You can on Win 7.
You can set it to "metered internet access" or some such mode, but then you don't get any auto updates AFAIK.

Re: Windows 10 Update 3/12/17
in settings go to *windows update*
Under *update settings* click on the blue bit that says *change active hours*
Set the times that you are most likely using the 'puter. Save.
Windholes won't install updates (without asking you) during these times.
Mines set 8 am to 9 pm.

Re: Windows 10 Update 3/12/17
Ahh the Windows Creator update.. Yep did mine the other day and started to wish I hadn't when it took the amount of time it took. Must have shutdown and restarted a gazillion times ( probably an exaggeration, but seemed like it anyway)

Re: Windows 10 Update 3/12/17
Yes Windows 10 updates are the worst thing about it, do seem to take a long time to find and download them then can take forever to install.
I had the large update a few days ago now every time I want to shut down it tells me Toshiba Flash Cards are preventing shut down I have to click the "close anyway" button.
Messed about trying to sort it but I have decided to leave it for another week or so when hopefully Toshiba or windows have sorted it out!
