Just thinking I should call the OH "Velma"
For the above reason. (At least once / day)

What nicknames have you / work-colleges / pub mates got?

To be nice, don't give their real name.

More recently I've been known as AJ, when I was still in short trousers my Dad used to call me Snotface, at school it was usually Plesplops - it's a wonder I still know who I am.

It's John: I'm John, OK, got that?

My most common one was skippy because I was forever "recovering " things from skips.
Some nicknames seemed obvious , we had "Blakey" a site agent who looked like the character from "On the Buses" . Others less so . Another site agent was nicknamed "lamppost" . When someone enquired why he was told it was because you "get more sense out of a lamppost". On one job I heard a guy referred to as "moss side" which I assumed was because that was his origin but when I asked why he had that nickname I was told " we call him that because he's rough" .

We used to called a mate "tubey" as we thought he looked like a test tube baby when it was all the news back in the 80's

The name stuck ever since

I used to be known as BB (baby bear) in the army as there was another guy with the same surname as me named Bear. My mate has a white eyebrow and was instantly named badger. My other mate was known as petrol bomb because when we were training for Northern Ireland he ran away during a simulated riot.

Some guys I've known for years and still don't know their proper names or at least I keep forgetting.

There's a group of bathroom fitters I work with occasionally who make a point of coming up with the most politically-incorrect, offensive, nicknames they can for everyone on site. I get away *really* lightly with the name "big nose c**t", often shortened to "BNC" or even "Beyonce" (that was after I made the rookie mistake of protesting that I didn't think my nose was really all that big, after one of them took the mick about it).

I can't actually post most of them... The heating engineer is of Caribbean descent, and his nickname is related to something you used to find on a jar of Robinson's jam. The thing is, they're the nicest blokes you could hope to meet -- people you would really trust your life to in a dodgy situation. Site humour is a tricky thing to explain to anyone who hasn't experienced it. Bit of a dying art too, sadly, with all the political correctness we have these days.

Wobs is what most know me as. Short for Wobble Gob.

We also have a Blakey, as he used to drive a bus.

We had someone called Weeble, owing to the way she danced at nightclubs shortly after an ankle operation.

Mum - friend who was older than us, and owned a house before the rest of us did.

Yogi - Friend looked like Yogi Bear

Fluff - Friend who hardly ever shaved.

Once had a boss known as the Sheriff. The reasons were less than PC, but he thought it was because he had such authority.

A bloke at an old work was called "Jaffa" after 3 months off due to a operation

Another was called "Camshaft" (He always complained about his camshaft rattling)
