Patching up textured render

Post by PeteWilliams »

Hi,

I'm installing a new exterior light and need to chase the cable along the external wall for a few inches, so will have to patch up the and repaint the external render shown in this picture:

Any suggestions how to do that? What is this render made from and how can I recreate it?

Cheers

Although I can't be positive, I am pretty sure that the finish is Tyrolean over traditional flat sand/cement render.
This finish is applied from an hand held applicator which literally splatters the finish over the wall.
It is indeed difficult to repair small patches.
You said that the required chase is only a few inches, could you not move the light to suit the cable location?

Thanks fro the reply. I'd rather not move the light, as I want it to be symmetrical with the light on the other side.

The other option if patching up isn't viable, is to drill through the wall at an angle rather than going perpendicular and then across. Not ideal either though…

if its only a few inches, why not just paint the cable same color, or use a exterior filler and add in some small pebbles/aggregate, then paint :dunno:

Don't see whats wrong drilling the hole at an angle, that the way my door phone was wired through a 13" wall
Plenty of cables going through walls at angles around the country

Yeah, I think drilling at an angle may not be as bad an option as I first thought.

Can finally use that pythagoras theorem I learnt 25 years ago to work out the right angle for entry/exit holes to be in the right place. Then use the mitre saw and bench drill to build a guide to get the angle right.

whats on the inside? Would it be easier to patch up on the inside?
Remember if you drill from inside out an SDS can punch through the render and know a big chuck off (as every SKY installer seems to do, so maybe slow down when you get to the final part

DIY_Jhonny is correct! Drill from the outside in the place where you want the light. Then chase the inside for the cable and repair.
It will save you a lot of grief in repairing the external Tyrolean.

The problem is that on the inside it's a T-junction with another internal wall, so I can't drill straight through.

What I've done is use some schoolboy maths to work out the exact angle I need to drill through for my entry and exit holes to be in the right place and then used my mitre saw and bench drill to build a little guide block to ensure I go in at the right angle - https://photos.app.goo.gl/Eob9fMO8n9N0Yezt2

I'll let you know how I get on!

Got my exit point bang-on! https://photos.app.goo.gl/f8ZubbwMzS2hy0I03

Turns out maths can actually be useful… who knew??
