laptop running hot (CPU?)

Basically as per title. Fan is clear of dust and has been blasted with canned air. CPU runs at mid to high 60's C under very low load*, fan on full speed and can be heard running... even when closed (the forum pages) the fan at full speed and CPU running hot ... Intermittent though. some days fine and then other days just seems to want to run hot ?

Ideas???

When you say low load what programmes are loading at start up check in windows 7 its system configuration/ startup and services and you can disable from there to get the full picture
What programmes are automatically checking for updates constantly eg Chrome every 15min adobe if you turn them off what if anything happens
What AV program are you running have you tried disabling my problem was mainly AVG

Does it run hot on start up ? what is the rpm of the fan running at (download speedfan to check)

i would check to see what processes are running in the background, do a malware and antivirus check.

Another possibility could be that the CPU heatsink has come loose. They can do over time . Happened to mine!

Thermal compound between heat sink and processor can also 'dry out' and require replacement.

I would add that fans which come with PC's are pretty bog standard. You get buy a much better one that run near silent.

I have a liquid cooler external fan set up, ....but I'm a nerd.
It keeps the CPU at 35deg even at overclocking and running benchmarks. Before I changed it, the heatsink came loose and temps ran to 90 deg and it would just shut down.

Bit awkward for carrying around a laptop after doing that mod to it....

Yes, it'd happened to this desktop machine after about 18 months. Checked the temp and it was still up after dusting out.

already had speccy installed hence knowing the CPU was running too hot.

Looks like I will have to remake the heatsink. Bugger of a job on the laptop though.

Lappy got worse... when switched on this morning went up to 70 degrees just running speccy

Currently using the old laptop that you saved for me Billy Goat.

Is it running windows 10? have you upgraded to windows 10 if so it might possibly be another potential cause to rule out before disassembling

I'll take it apart and have a look. Oh and if it is a pcb fault what oven temperature and for how long ??????

If you put the whole lot in as solder melts at 188c (gas mark 5), then the plastic would melt before the solder and it would come out like a plastic blob with some bits of metal in wouldn't it ?
