Floor tiling over Chipboard.

Post by Red »

Hi,

Im about to tile the kitchen floor of a house ive recently moved into. After removing the vinyl tiles which has left a sticky residue the underlying floor is chipboard.
I know tiling straight onto chipboard is not advised. so I wondered what was best to cover the chipboard in as it is also not that level and has a bit of water damage in a couple of spots.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Overboard it with 9mm ply and fix any damaged chipboard beforehand.
Screw at 100mm intervals.

Better still use "no-more-ply". no need for any primer then.

Never seen this stuff wine-o. How thick is it and does it just screw down same as plywood?

Screw the chipboard down firmly. Then on top of that then screw in concrete board (hardiebacker). Don't forget to leave expansion gaps and fill it with the appropriate mortar.

If you want to do it the cheap way then screw the chipboard down and then screw in 6mm wbp ply at least 100mm centres - this decreases expansion) and use NX flexible universal tile adhesive. Remember, the cheap way is not the recomended way.

Cement based boards are great. I've had a steady leak in my bathroom for good knows how long. Cement board was wet through but tiles still stuck fast. PB or ply and it would be a different story.

Just screw in or a cement based adhesive to bond . Can be a bugger to cut though with a knife especially if you need to knock of an inch or so

Thanks for all the replies, If I go down the ply route can I use say 25- 30mm screws so that they will only go through to the chipboard or do I need to go to the joists where I can. The reason I ask is that there are gas pipes below the floor but I am unsure of there exact location or route or how deep they are.

With the tile backer boards can they just be attached with tile adhesive straight onto the chipboard ( I assume this will need priming) or do they also need to be screwed down?

Thanks again for any responses.

6 or 12 mm, best glued and screwed.
