Hi guys
Please can somebody offer some advice?
My car has just started making a 'dull clacking' noise. It's a Peugeot 206 2005 model. Manual. Reasonable condition.
Symptoms are:
+ When I have my foot on the accelerator it doesn't make the noise at all.
+ When I'm cruising or braking it does
+ The sound is coming from the front (possibly near side) of the car
+ It is very fast (like a vibration/rattling noise) when driving at 30mph and it slows down as the car slows down - stopping when I come to a stop
+ My passenger said it almost sounded like small pebble had got caught behind the front nearside wheel
I checked the exhaust isn't loose. I opened the bonnet but couldn't see anything that might rotate against a trapped object as the car is in cruise and braking mode.
Any suggestions, please? I only use the car for a couple of days every 2 weeks to ferry elderly neighbours to the shops and though I keep it in good condition, I try not to spend out too much on repairs if I can help it.
Many thanks for any pointers.
Karen

It changes with speed - rotational eg. a wheel
hubcaps or alloys ? could be any number of things, jack it up, and spin the tire
Also feel across the tire, all around, it may be a stone or something stuck in the tire

Thanks. I'll check that out - though it doesn't happen when accelerating and I'd have thought it if it were in the wheel, it would still make a noise when accelerating.

Commonly the CV joint. If you turn the wheel to full lock and try to move the car, does it 'hop' of make the noise more significantly? Try to the left and right.
Don't take it personally......

Hi Kellys_eye - thanks for that suggestion. Just so I'm clear. are you saying I should start the engine, turn the wheel fully round to the left and then accelerate? I'll give it a go but in order to move the car, I'd need to press the accelerator - and that's when I don't hear it...
