Buy or build nas

Hi there I'm looking to either buy or build my own nas but buying seems cheaper,
I looking for a clear case in my own design does any one on here build nas devices

For the hassle factor alone its not worth it, I have run whs and server 2012 in the past and have moved over to synology Nas's the power consumption on its own is a major saving 3-500w server vs a 17-20w Nas (0.5w in standby), the Nas is near silent and kick out way less heat
its well supported and does what you would want from a server in most cases
as for brands synology or qnap , steer clear of the linksys, WD and buffalo Nas devices

that makes 2 of us then
A Nas is like a workshop, some where to store all your carp until you need it, Then spend hours trying to remember where you put in the first place

Walter, I have just googled it!
Seems it is what I may have been looking for as an office back up.
Was looking at the DS218, but don't know if that is overkill for my situation

Are we still talking about this? or has the thread gone dead?
I went down the FreeNas route a few weeks ago buying
thisas the base unit
I installed the FreeNas (OS) on a 32gig USB drive then jacked into a USB drive mount point directly on the motherboard
Booted it up and got it running
I did play around using the supplied hard disks to get a feel for "FreeNas" and liked the web interface so I swapped out the supplied hard disks that came with the box for four WD Red 4Gig drives and set it up in a Raid configuration
then had at it,
Likes are more than the dislikes about the base unit
likes (it's low noise [laptop equivalent], price, well made, the ability to expand, no fix or fuss drive installation? drives slot right into the motherboard
Don't like
There is space for more memory but you need to remove the drive bays to access it. Not the worst bad point.
look at the spex for the base unit and it is quite a good purchase as a NAS box
