A question (rather more than one question) for probably Bob but happy to hear from everyone.

My neighbour has been fixing his 2002ish 1600 16v laguna, petrol, engine type I believe BG05. Latest issue following a replacement of crankshaft pulley and then wishbone goes like... car will not start. It started once once when the pulley was replaced, some smoke somewhere from the engine compartment (possibly from the ancillary belt), then more work on the car for the wishbone and now it does not start.

Crankshaft/camshaft?? locator gone wrong is one possibility and it is being replaced next.
Electrician checked it and says low compression, and suggests slipped belt.

Is the belt more likely to slip when the pulley was being replaced and possibly the crankshaft was turned against the engine rotation?

I guess/believe it is an interference engine so how much slip of the belt (how many teeth roughly) could end up in the valves kissing the pistons?

I am only repeating second hand what I have been told. :?
