Faulty Gearbox

Post by QualityKitchens »

I've just bought a Volkswagen Polo which is a over 10 years old. You could say I have a real need for speed!

Anyway, I've had it for a few weeks and the gear box keeps popping our of gear! It's happened a couple of times in short succession, once going from stationary onto a road, once doing about 30 and putting it into 4th, and another time when I stalled it. Is there something wrong with my gearbox or is it just a fault with the nut behind the wheel?

Probably the selector linkage not pushing it into gear fully. Search VW shifter linkage, there are loads of videos and threads on owners forums. :thumbright:

The nut behind the wheel may have a screw loose. Great effort at pushing up your post count? So you can give us something we weren't looking for.

what year and engine ? as above its the bushes in the linkage or a bad engine mount (lower mount) I would also check the gearbox fluid level too

edit. make sure the floormat hasn't slipped up behind the clutch pedal

It's not the floormat. That was the first thing I thought too!

Year is 2008. Not sure with the rest, will have a proper look under the hood tomorrow.

:withstupid: If it is happening in more than one gear and when torque applied then highly unlikely the g.box more like engine movement and or linkage.

Iirc 2008 make it a 9n3 if its anything like the golfs it eats the bushings for breakfast (especially the cheap pattern part ones) you can get aftermarket uprated ones

not 100% but the golf and the polo share the same 5 speed on the larger engine cars
