Ceiling perimeter noggins

Post by Kara999 »

Hi I am hoping someone can help me.

I am about to plasterboard my ceiling with 12.5 mm sheets of plasterboard. I will be attaching this directly to the joists which are spaced at 450mm apart.

The problem I have are the edges of the room on 2 walls. There is no joists or supports there and because it’s such a small space I don’t think I’ll be able to get any in. The edges are approx 200mm. I’m worried that without the support the skim coat will crack.

I will be putting normal noggins in between the joists to support the plasterboard edges

Do I really have to put anything on the edges and if I do how should I go about it.

I tried to upload photos but the website won’t let me.

Thanks in advance

If the walls are already plastered, I'd say you need some support. If there's a full thickness of plaster (not just skim coat) going on the walls then as long as the ceiling is boarded first the plaster should hold up the p/b.

If the walls and ceiling will only be skimmed then I'd fit a supplementary joist along those long edges, perimeter noggins are fairly standard in regulated new builds but often neglected elsewhere with very little detrimental effect if joists are @ 400mm centres.

To solve your conundrum, fit a piece of timber screwed down to the top of three joists and up to the wall with no joist (one each end of the room as a minimum) and then hang (screw) another joist or batten of equal depth from those timbers - or just screw a tile batten to the wall.
