Patching Ceiling

Post by jimmy86 »

Hi,

During removal of a warm air heating system, the gas engineer removed a flue from the kitchen ceiling. This left a fairly large hole and damaged area of plasterboard.

I have chopped out the plasterboard and reboarded but my question is what would be the best product to use to get a good finish over the board? I've not plastered before so and tips would be appreciated. The patch is 500mm x 400mm.

Thanks

Hi,
What thickness needs to be plastered, i.e. the distance from the face of the new plasterboard to the desired ceiling level?

This will determine your options

If you are not experienced at plastering, and a DIYer like me, perhaps a 'one coat plaster' that you can apply in one go and then sand to smooth. Sanding isn't what pros might do, but it works well for a DIYer.

When I'm blending into existing ceiling/wall, I finish by using a thin layer of fine surface filler (plaster of paris, toupret, or easi-fill) and then sand it back untill you cant feel an edge anymore where it joins the existing plaster.

There will probably be better advice here soon from a professional, but this works well for me.
