Does a bathroom sink HAVE to have a spashback?

Just wondering since the one I have just fitted looks pretty good without and I have seen pictures in a magazine without - but is this wise?
We have mosaic tiles on the windowsill and the join of white wall towels to the top may look a little odd - but I can bear that if the alternative is folly. Would only be a couple of tiles so it is not the work but the appearance.
Cheers

I think you will find that the back of the sink will get splashed a lot and so the surface should be something that can easily be wiped clean.

It's not a sink it's a Basin.

Have to = No.

But what UHM says should be taken into consideration.

Where I come from it's a bathroom sink.

If you are posh, it is a basin

So what your saying is that I have a sink (as I suspected) but aspire to a basin.
Tiles going up today - well what else is a rainy bank holiday for?
Thanks
