VW POLO '06 1.2 LITRE - Humming noise from engine! **VIDEO**

Hi Everyone! Hope someone on here can help....

I've had this high pitch humming/whistling noise coming from my engine. It happens when I accelerate at a certain point usually heard in the first 3 gears. (noise still is heard when pressing the clutch in) it is also heavily noticeable after switching off the engine as seen in the video.

I hope someone knows the issue, sometimes it's barely noticeable, sometimes louder and sometimes does happen at all, so I'm at a loose end with this one!

Please see the following video of the noise : (Video has a few different clips, might need to turn the volume up to hear the noise, hard job to do when driving!)

Sorry not a clue from just this:

However, noise in first three gears only would be layshaft bearing(s) in gearbox, as fourth gear is straight through and fifth is overdrive. You say no difference when pressing clutch, what about when throw it into neutral and roll at speed?

Its a rotational sound, Its nothing to do with the gearbox IMO as it does it when turning the engine off/spinning down

Its hard to tell without seeing it in person but I would be looking at the alternator or AC clutch

edit. It may be a slipping belt (think squeaky brakes on a bicycle) rubber on metal

Could be AC as Bob says, does the noise go away/change when you run the AC?
