Plastering advice needed please!

After a little bit of advice please!
I have an area about 90cm square to replaster (with hole in the middle for a vent).
I’ve been given an offcuts of plasterboard but I don’t know how to fix it to the wall and think it would stick out too far anyway so I’m happy to just plaster.
I’ve patched smaller areas but nothing this big so my questions are:
Do I need to do anything to the wall first - it is back to bear brick?
What plaster should I use and is there a ready mix version I can buy?
Do I need to put anything round the edges of the hole I need to leave?

Hi

Photos please, (you will need to crop and shrink the size) to allow the upload of a large image
its a hassle but a pic or a few pics really help the professionals get on board.
