Fuses tripped - now only some rooms lights work???

Post by thewilson »

Help needed in my first home...

My fuse box tripped, and normally I have just reset things and they work. This time I reset the tripped switch, and now the bath/kitchen/living room lights don't work, and the hall/bedroom lights do. All sockets and appliances seem to be working normally.

Its a one bed flat, and I'd just like to know if there are some checks I can perform before hiring an electrician.

Thanks

It seems like the lights you have on now are the first ones on the circuit and that from the last light you have working onwards you have 'Lost' the feed or neutral.

Turn off the breaker controlling all the lights that atre on the circuit and try inspecting the connections in all of the other lights which are not working and see if you can find any loose connections, snapped cables etc. IF nothing is obvious then maybe there is a dmaged cable between one point and the next. The fact the the breaker tripped means that there was either a direct fault between live and neutral or live and earth or maybe a lamp has just blown. By the way you describe it though it seems asthough you have a fault in one of your lights and when it was reset it blew the short out and now the circuit seems as though its working fine but only upto the last light.

Let us know how you get on

What circuit breakers do you have in the consumer unit?

ie. 2* 5 amp breakers
2*32 amp breakers etc.

If the breaker tripped and you reset it and now nothing on that circuit will work it could be a faulty MCB, or a problem with the circuit itself.

I would guess that the lights that are still working are wired to another mcb, and this is why they are still working.

do you have a voltage tester that is non contact- one where you only need to touch it near to a live wire to test? such as a volt stick-

I would be suprised if he has more than one lighting circuit in his 1 Bed flat, maybe a smoke detector circuit, but not many have 2 lighting circuits for that size property .
