problems loading programs?

I accidentally left my computer on last night and it has been on for a full 24 hrs. I tried to get the monitor up by wiggling the mouse and nothing happened. I had to pull the plug. It re-booted and runs fine into windows as normal. When I try to open a program it just hangs with the hour glass showing?? I have tried internet explorer, my mail program and even the restore where it gets as far as accessories and then hangs? Anyone had this problem before?

i think it 50 50 leave there computers on virtualy all the time so i dont think thats a problem in its self
