VNC seems to be the daddy - never used it myself
I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman, "Where's the self-help section?"
She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.

Expanding on that a bit, MS RDC (Remote Desktop Connection) is quite good - and free. I do use that when I want to control my MCE box in another room

and if in the same room, I use an App called MaxiVista which allows you to either control multiple PCs with the same mouse and keyboard - without having to use a switch - and also to make another PCs screen work as an extended screen to your PC over the network - pretty cool :thumbright:

cheers Richie

its a long story but i used to have a massive desk in the corner of the room ,2 pcs wired up ,1 monitor and to be honest it took over the room
well we have just finished decorating this room and had to move the pc table out due to new carpet being fitted
well i knew i was in trouble when the wife said "doesnt this room look big without your pc desk in"

so its now down the skip and i am running a laptop sat on a new dining table

so i just want to stand one unit in the corner out the way ,networked to laptop but allowing remote access so i can keep all my crap on there instead of on the laptop
missus happy with that so you know the saying ..if she`s happy im happy

yup - Maxivista is a way to remotely control a pc without having to switch keyboards and mouse - like a networked KVM and also get extra screen space on those PCs that just run background tasks as an extra screen on your PC - it is a good program, but for pretty specific circumstances.

VNC is deffo the "best" solution I think :thumbright: And you could stick the old PC under the stairs or something RIGHT out the way - no box, no fan noise :thumbright:

how you finding using the dining room table though?
I work from home 99% of time and have an office setup. Wife works from home maybe 50% of time and we cannot share office (too many arguments would ensue) so her desk is in my office but she is downstairs on kitchen table  and getting a good position for entended time at the PC is tricky

yep vnc looks they way ,trial download as well and only 17 quid for full programme

thats the idea with the box ,out the way in the cupboard under the stairs

getting used to the table now but was a nightmare to start with ,probably because everything is tidy now instead of the organised chaos it was

Real VNC is free. You shouldn't be paying for it.

Logmein free version also works well.

Logmein tells me I don't have the necessary privileges to start services 9/10ths of the way through installation. Er, it's my laptop and there's only me on it so I'm admin?!

If I can't fix it with a hammer it's an electrical fault.

not neccessarly. it is bad practice (but common practice) to have your regular login as an admin level.

Sure there is not another logon?

Ah. Yeah. Cheers, hooviebaby...

It appears I may have known that when I set the system up and then forgotten it when it came to installing progs like this
