I managed to do a few like it, but its been a long time since i did any brickwork
I've tried but must have been using the wonky cutting side of my trowel

I bought a 9" grinder for putting in a new kitchen doorway, it got halfway through but as i didnt want to cut in the dining room, i bolstered the rest out, still made much neater and faster.
Will come in handy for slabs too, but i will get a diamond disc for that.
