New Consumer Unit

Post by Mad Chemist »

Hi,

This will be the first of many electrical based questions, and i'll put some pictures of the wiring in my garage up in the "horror" section when I get a chance as it's V V bad.

Anyway, simple question, I want a new MCB consumer unit fitting, and would like to know if anyone has any ideas roughly what a fair price for a job like this is?

Also should i specify more "ways" than i need -ie they come in 6 way 8 way etc... to allow futher circuits to be added later if needed?

It's a large 3 bed house if that helps.

Thanks

Andy

ps, the house has been rewired at some point as all the wiring i've found is the newer gray type (though lots of the black rubber wiring has been left in place grrrrrrr ::b

It varies depending on where you live.

I don't know about york.

I have heard of prices of between £250 and £400.

I used to recommend getting one your self and getting a sparks to fit it, but the sparks have said that this is a bad idea, as if the consumer unit goes faulty then you have no comeback with the sparks that fitted it.

I changed about 10 consumer units before Part P, mainly in my own houses or in friends houses- for free.

Changing one only takes a couple of hours, but now it all the testing that takes the time and bumps the price up.

This is a good example of where Part p has not made home electrics safer as most people are put off by the price and so will stick with their old fusebox, even though it could be seriously overloaded.

I'd get a split way one if I was you, they are much safer and not much dearer
