No dial tone since sky "reactivated" line

Post by kjay »

Hi All,

I was hoping somebody could help me please. Here is the story.....

We have recently had sky installed for tv, bband and phone (no previous provider). Before I called sky I used a line test phone and received a dial tone. Since sky have installed our tv wiring and "reactivated" the telephone line at BT's end (they said there was a line there but wasn't active) we now have no dial tone at all. When i spoke with their technical dept they said that the line test showed a fault with our equipment - ran through the various tests and nothing worked, have checked all wires and they're correct....is there really something wrong with our "equipment" or is this a line problem? - can't really afford the BT call out fees!

:help:

Notes:
- We can't find where the phone line enters the building from the outside!
- We have 2 telephone sockets 1 in the front room, 1 in dining room....the dining room socket has the removable 1/2 plate (and is the newer socket) but the one in the front room, which we're assuming to be the original socket and where the outside line enters, has the ring capacitor.

Thanks if you can help

You need to identify the master socket, remove the face plate, plug a phone into the test socket and test it.

I'm tired so this is a little incoherent
just to establish some facts.

theres no telephone pole outside?

if not then it could be potentially be an underground install but not sure if BT did them.

there usually is a small rectangular junction box right after the line enters the property, if you can find it then trace back to the first socket.

What kind of property do you live in? I ask as bungalows for example sometimes have the master socket in the loft or the junction box hidden up there.

Thanks for the responses...

I've tried the test socket (didning room) and there is no dial tone......

No telephone poles outside, living in a semi-detatched. We've looked around the street and the terraced houses in our street have junction boxes on the front of their properties leading into the front rooms - can't see where our next door neighbours is though. We've looked in the loft to see if any wires are coming up between us and the neighbours and there is nothing.

I've got a feeling the line may be running underneath the driveway?

could be a screwup at the exchange when they hooked your DSL up?
does your phone ring when you dial the number? (Shouldnt...but I never assume anything, seen too many odd things over the years)

Hi...

The Sky man hasn't moved the master socket .....

No the phone doesn't ring it originally said "Sorry you are unable to leave a message at the moment" but have just tried again and it has an engaged tone?

Any thoughts? I might try Sky again to run a line test?

Thanks

Thanks to all for your responses, I have had a professional out and he has confirmed that there isn't an active line coming into the property - time to call Openreach!

What were you plugged into when you got that dialling tone you mentioned in the first post?
