operating system

Apologies if this has been asked before, did a search but couldn't find anything

I am currently running vista and becoming more and more disatisfied with its sluggishness.

When my old PC died I saved the hard drive and fitted it into a remote housing so I could plug it into my usb drive and access all the stuff on there when and if I wanted too, on this hard drive is still my old copy of xp

So my options appear to be;

1. stop moaning and live with vista,
2. use xp from my old drive (not sure i could find the licence number though) and is it possible to just copy it across to my new pc's drive?
3. Download and use a different operating system altogether.

So anyone got any thoughts on which would be my best option, i am not a complete 'puter numpty but its a good few years since I was a 12 year old wizz kid!!

So whichever option you recommend be aware that I will come back and ask 'how do I do that?'

1. Get more RAM. You need at least 2GB for it to run well.

2. You can't copy it across. Windows was installed to work with the hardware in your old PC. Even if you find the licence, it probably won't be able to be activated as MS store the key.

3. Try Ubuntu on CD. It runs from the CD without installing on your hard drive. If you like it, install it so it runs quicker.

I will agree with richie,
another option is fedora, ubuntu has a much friendlier community though and mostly it just works.

How much ram have you got it probably needs more, you can also add memory from a usb flash drive with ready boost but dont know how good it works, and you could try this made mine a lot faster, its a free trial you have to pay after 30 days but the changes stay on computer ad theres nothing stopping you reinstalling after 30 days.

i dont see much difference in speed beteen xp and vista or windows7 x64, but im running with 4gig of ram.

Windows 7 is out very soon, it's very like Vista but alot better. If you REALLY don't like Vista id say stick with Windows XP.

What version of Vista are you running?

Yep Windows 7 is very good indeed have been running betas and the release candidate without issues, Windows 7 is what vista should have been and i would say its probably better than xp but time will tell about that.

Apart from ie crashing every five minutes and not being able to move stuff around in folders its brilliant, its better than vista but theres no way i would pay thru the nose for 7 ultimate and all the goodies will be missing from the other versions, and microsoft will milk every penny out of it for the first year or two anyway, add to that the fact that an oem copy of vista premium has gone up over 50% in past 18 months dont think i will upgrade when rc runs out.

I dont use IE lol and havent had any probs with folders, I will be getting my copy as a system builder from my freindly pc shop so wont be paying the whopping £300 supposed cost for ultimate even though we were ripped off big time with vista ultimate

personally i find windows annoying with too many quirks, just a shame AMD wont update the linux driver for my gfx card
so next card will be nvidia

Not really well up on linux, tried one called symbian or somthing pretty good but its strange after windows, going to cost at least £120 for an oem copy of 7ultimate and it aint that much better than vista, got hold of a few vista oltimate keys will try them instead, think mainly its what your used to.
