Bedroom wall problem

Post by Na_Na »

Hi
I'm decorating three bedrooms in my house. Two of the bedrooms are fine but we have an issue regarding one of the walls in the remaining room.

The outer wall of this particular bedroom wall had been re-pointed last year as the mortar had been heavily weathered. I think that water coming through this wall, caused the cracks that we have on this bedroom wall. There was also a wardrobe and dressing table against this wall which probably didn't allow for any of the water to dry properly and has caused a mark (stain) on the wall which matches up with were the wardrobe and dressing table used to be.

The wall is dry to the touch; I'm not sure if the marks on the wall are just a stain or if there is a serious damp problem. Do I need to do anything to this wall before I start to paint. I have included some photos’ below. Any advice would be great.

You could do with testing the wall with a damp meter really to make sure it is not damp.

Does it sound hollow when you knock the plaster with your knuckles?

You can buy a damp detector from B&Q for about a tenner!

I managed to get a damp detector, they didn't have any at my local B&Q but ordered one from Amazon which was very easy to use.

The reading said that there wasn't any damp problem with the wall :-). I guess I will sort out the cracks with Poyfilla and just give it a good clean before I start to decorate this wall.

Those meters are really handy :thumbright:

You might want to check with the decorators to see what they advise regarding painting the wall
