Tile adhesive

Post by marfulee »

I've just finished tiling the kitchen, I reckon I've been getting about 3m2 coverage per bag, though it reckons you can get about 7.5m2 per bag. It's Unibond advanced waterproof floor tile adhesive.

Have I been spreading it on too thick?

I definitely don't think I've been mixing it too thick and I 've been using a notched trowel. The only reason I can come up with is that the surface was relatively rough after I chiselled off the vinyl tiles and the crumbly floor levelling screed - and I didn't use more floor levelling screed.

It's worth noting that what you can actually do and what it says on the bag are usually different.

The 7.5 m2 will be if all the right conditions are met perfectly. You said the floor was rough, so it's going to take a bit more.

My Kitchen floor was horrendous and I used about 2.5 times the amount a "perfect" Floor would have used. It was less adhesive and more hole filler, leveller, and advesive.

Marfulee, it's weird, the bag of adhesive I used recently gave me a good 100m2 coverage

It was a 200kg bag though and I was using 1mm notched trowel

there is a simple answer to this. if it says on the packet that you get 10m out of it you have to remember that if your anything like me, 5 metres worth will end up on your clothes

Cheers, it wasn't just me then... :)

7.5m2 is clearly in lab conditions with a flat surface and wafer thin notches of adhesive...

On a slightly different subject, how stiff do you mix the adhesive? I found my mixes were somewhat more sloppy than say B&Q ready mixed stuff (which is a PITA to spread as it doesn't seem to stick very readily).
