What is tanking ????

Hi all
having just joined your forum, I have read just about all posts written in the forums with great interest.
I have found, under the tiling forum a mention to tanking can this please be explained to me as I am about to finish my main bathroom and start on my ensuite where I will be forming the floor for the shower and tiling the whole floor incorporating the shower. Iam interested in this TANKING????
I have asked a few people here in Aust. and they have not heard of it

Its a waterproof layer, usually installed in the wetest areas of the bathroom etc.

BAL come highly recommended, the shower tanking kit is described on page 19 of this PDF

thank you for the info, I had already applied a water proof membrane in my shower and tiled over this, I must be on the right track
