BT Dropwire Connections

Post by Mental »

Hi

I live in house built in the 1930's that when we moved in 5 years ago or so was infested with many telephone points and extensions, over time I have sucessfully removed
most of them and tidied things up somewhat. I am concerned about the small box ( BT16 I believe ) attached to the outside wall where the BT dropwire terminates.
Inside this box is a "chocolate" block type terminal block wired as follows ( see picture as well )

Dropwire-- Cable going to Master Socket
Black-----White with Blue stripe
Green-----Blue with White stripe
Orange----White with Blue stripe
White-----Not Connected

Is this correct ? from what I have seen posted elsewhere on this site I would expect to be using just the Black and Green wires.
Should I just remove the orange wire ?

Thanks for your help

John

Hi Mental and :welcome:

You can disconnect the orange wire from the choc block and see if your call or internet is effected, it shouldn't be.
Get the spiders webs out of the coupling and just have the two wires, black and green connected which is all that BT would use now if wired into a Master socket at terminals A & B.

Ensure that the white and orange do not make contact with each other or the other wires.

Bear in mind that you're messing with BT's stuff and really shouldn't be (although we all do  )
Don't take it personally......

Blame it on the Incy Wincy Spider practicing his web plaiting.

Hmm that reminds me, my master socket needs relocated to the corner from the middle of the wall....BT are unflipping-believable sometimes.
Might also shorten the cable run post drop wire as currently it runs all over the attic (and I mean everywhere) before doubling back and coming down in the middle of one of the living room walls.
Last place had the junction box after the drop wire in the middle of a wall halfway up! Like putting it at the top of the wall would have been so much harder? Would have used less cable and looked a damned sight neater. Though when I have had to get Openreach out, I couldn't fault their work. Any work done thus far has been to a high standard and any mess made has been minimal :thumbright:
