Re-colouring grout for terra cotta tiles?

Post by Fran K »

I have just had terracotta tiles laid in my hallway. Unfortunately the tiler used a black / anthracite grouting and I really dislike how it looks. I have asked whether the grout can be changed for a lighter colour but have been told that this would be too difficult and would risk damaging the terracotta tiles. The builder is recommending that he paints the grout with a light Dulux eggshell paint and then seals both the tiles and the grout. Is this a good idea? I'm concerned that it may look even worse and wear badly. What is the best course of action? Is re-grouting really so difficult? or would a different paint be better?

Getting the old grout out is harder than putting it in, but you have tools "Fein" that will do the job fairly quickly and safely. Don't think paintings a good idea. But I'm not an expert.
