Renault Laguna 1995 Diesel - Starting problems.

Post by Old Vinyl »

I am assured it's the injectors. But I went to a Quickfit type garage here, and was told "We wouldn't attempt to look at/change the injectors, you've got a lot of mileage (150,000) and they could break when removing them" .

Has anyone encountered this on high mileage engines? :help:

I have booked it into the local Renault dealership for an estimate Wednesday

I bought a new socket set to try and change them myself - but I can't get a good purchase on the nut  I'm afraid of getting them out ... but not manoevering new ones back in on the end of a socket.

Em, what is the 'Has Thanked' button ? I always thank people on here that reply to me

Sure it's the injectors?

When a diesel is hard to start the first thing to check is the glow plugs. Not much you can do if they are siezed in the block though..... that could prove expensive.

BTW the 'thanks' button appears on OTHER PEOPLES posts, not your own!

Thanks

Em, yes maybe its the glow plugs, over here they call them 'bougies', maybe thats what I meant - glow plugs. Do they get seized in the block after 150,000 miles  .

I've just spotted the 'Thanks' button ... em' I never saw that before

They can get siezed in the head yes and can be troublsome to get out start dosing them with WD40 to give them every chance to come out.

The glow plugs get a lot of corrosion around the base (where they sit against the cylinder head) and 'pooling' some WD40 there would help. Leave it soaking for at least a day. Make sure you get a long-reach socket that fits PERFECTLY over the plug and keep it vertical. A few sharp taps on the turing bar will get it moving.

Thanks.
But, I'm booked in to the Renault dealership Friday, they're doing me a quote. I tried to get at the glow plugs last week with a new socket set ...... nightmare!! I got some purchase with the socket on the first one, but didn't dare to turn, because I knew if I took it out, there was no way I would maneovre a new one back in :cb I reckon they'll have to take the cyclinder cover (?) off to get at em' properly

Appointment yesterday at Renault dealership for estimate on starting problems.

I left it there at 3pm and walked up to supermarket. I was back about 3.30 and could see it still in workshop. About 3.45 I was told there is nothing wrong with the glow plugs, and they could only speculate it may be one of the other electric components, one of which (he pointed to) would incur a €200 (£180) bill just to 'regulate' it . So, with me, the receptionist and the mechanic all still in the dark, I said ok, I'll think about it and maybe return the car next week after I have made some enquiries. :dunno:

I went back to waiting area and watched mechanic drive it back out to the customer parking ... but, he returned it again to workshop door, got out and came in to me to say "Have you got 2 minutes? I think I know what the problem is!". He showed me the fuel pump, which he thought had a problem! He drove it back in workshop - with bonnet still up!!! . Another hour passed while I sat watching CSI Miami on TV dubbed into French .

In fact I didn't tell em', that after the starting problems, the engine continued to stutter for the first couple of km's. That may have assisted them with a more acurate diagnosis in the first place  .

At 5pm I was finally called to the desk to pay the bill €120 "Not too bad eh?" the receptionist said - I agreed. :thumbright:

Just checked the motor cold ................ started first time :huray:

I had starting problems with my old Vauxhall combo, I changed the glow plug myself but it didn't make a blind bit of difference.

Changing injectors is something I'd not do myself as it has already been stated that they can shear when trying to remove them and Renaults are not exactly known for their build quality

Glad you got it sorted at a bargain price :thumbright:
